If you show the least priority on compatibility and want to use your PC in any way, you may face problems like Blue Screen of Death. Sometimes the PC doesn’t even turn ON.
Are Monitors Compatible With All Computers?
All the latest generation monitors are compatible with all desktop and laptop computers unless the monitors have CRT technology. However, if you don’t find the common port on the monitor and PC, then you can use a converter like HDMI to DisplayPort or VGA to HDMI, etc.
The Cathode Ray Tube monitors have old and outdated technology. They are completely inefficient for present-day work. These milk white boxes have very few limitations like refresh rate, pixel resolution, type of ports, data transferring speed, etc.
I bet you don’t have a CRT monitor. So let’s see how a monitor is compatible with a PC.
How to Know if Monitor is Compatible with Desktop PC?
When it comes to desktop computers, you must know whether the monitor is compatible with them or not. Because it doesn’t have a built-in monitor, like a laptop.
If you see the common ports on the GPU and on the monitor, then you can conclude that they are compatible. For example, if you see HDMI on your graphics card and the monitor has the same HDMI port, then you can connect them with no doubt.
Just in case the GPU you have on your PC has the DisplayPort, and the monitor has an HDMI port. So, what should you do now? In this case, you can use the converters without buying another monitor or GPU.
If your PC has integrated graphics instead of a dedicated graphics card, then you should check the compatibility between your monitor and the motherboard. Because here you are going to connect the monitor to your motherboard ports instead of the GPU ports.

Now coming to the laptop, it is easy to check whether the monitor is compatible with your laptop or not. However, you can use the converters on both laptop and desktop computers if required.
If any of the connecting ports like HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort, etc, are common on both laptop and monitor, then you can say that monitor is compatible with the laptop.
Remember, when you connect a monitor to your laptop, the monitor performance is based on the GPU capability inside your laptop.
The monitor is the face of the computer, without it, you do nothing with your computer. Along with displaying output, monitors have various advantages these days.
First, you should collect all the required components that you need. I will discuss it more in a minute.

Check for the Common Ports on the Monitor and the CPU
In the CPU, you have two options to check whether the monitor is compatible with your CPU or not – ports on the motherboard & the ports on the GPU.

I suggest you have at least one common port on your CPU and on the monitor.
Here I have DisplayPort in common.
Place the Monitor and the CPU in the correct position
After the compatibility, you should place the components (CPU and the monitor) in the correct position as you like. This is the time to consider all the aspects like CPU air ventilation, monitor viewing angle, and the distance between you and the monitor, etc.
Watch these tips for placing your monitor in the correct position.
Plug the Cable into the CPU and the Monitor
Unlike the converter, the DisplayPort cable or the HDMI cable has the same port on both sides.
Plug one end of the cable into the CPU and the other end into the monitor.
Plugging a cable into the system is easy, and it is sensitive too. Here are some precautions you need to take while plugging a cable into the CPU and monitor.
Precautions While Plugging a Cable:
- Keep your hands dry and clean
- Make sure you are inserting the cable into the right port
- Be gentle. Don’t go hard. Otherwise, it can damage a port.
- Better to plug a cable when the system is off
- The CPU and the monitor ports must be clear
Make Necessary Connections [Power Cable & Keyboard and Mouse]
After connecting the signal transferring cable, you need to connect the power cable. The 3-pin power cable is used for desktop computers.
And then connect your keyboard and mouse by either wired or wireless. Just in case your monitor screen is blurry you can use these fixes.
Turn ON the Power Supply and Start to Use Your PC
Now turn ON the power supply to the CPU and then push the power button on the CPU. The fans inside the CPU start working and the monitor displays the motherboard brand.

How to Connect a Monitor to the Laptop?
You’ve seen the connection of a monitor to a desktop computer or CPU. Now it’s time to connect a monitor to your laptop.
Just follow the steps listed here, otherwise, there is a chance that your hardware components (laptop and monitor) will get damaged.
See the Common Ports on a Monitor and a Laptop
This is the first thing you need to do when you want to connect a monitor to your laptop – check for the common ports. For example, if your laptop has an HDMI port, then your monitor also must have an HDMI port in order to connect them.
However, in some cases, you can use converters like HDMI to VGA or HDMI to DisplayPort, etc to make the connection possible even if the ports are not in common. I don’t want this to be recommended because of some drawbacks.

Just in case your laptop has an HDMI port, and the monitor has DisplayPort, then you should buy the converter HDMI to DisplayPort.
Place them in Proper Positions where you want them to be
Now, select the position where you want your monitor and laptop to be placed. It is completely your wish to put your monitor either left or right based on your convenience.
Here is my advice, it’s better to place the monitor screen and the laptop screen both at the same height to increase your work productivity and reduce your strain when you look at both screens at a time.

Connect the Cable one end to the Monitor and another end to the Laptop
Now you have three things in front of you, a laptop, a monitor, and the cable to connect them.
- Look at the port on your laptop and the cable pin and insert it properly
- Now the other end is for a monitor. Insert the cable pin into the monitor
- If you using a converter, use it here before connecting to the monitor
- Put the cable behind your desk properly, otherwise, it will disturb you while using your PC
Don’t forget to give a power supply to your Monitor
If you want to connect a monitor to your PC or laptop, just connecting the monitor with a cable won’t work. You must connect the power supply cable to the monitor.
Here is the thing, monitor connecting ports like HDMI, VGA, DisplayPort, etc help only to transfer the signals from the CPU to the monitor. To turn ON and work, the monitor must need a power supply.
Turn ON your Laptop – Now the duplicate screen will appear on your monitor
It’s time to turn on the devices and check whether they are working or not. First, give a power supply to your monitor and it will display no signal (no problem).
Now, turn ON your laptop, after a few seconds, the duplicate screen of your laptop will appear on the monitor. It is your wish to use your monitor as a duplicate screen or a second screen. Here is the shortcut Win + P is helpful for you.
Just in case, if your monitor is not working and showing a black screen, then you can turn off the power supply wait for some time, and again start using your PC. This time it will work if there is any signal error that happens in between the devices.
