No Signal On Monitor [13 Proven Ways to Fix]

If your monitor displays ‘no signal’ even after you turn ON the CPU means the monitor doesn’t get the signal from the source (CPU).

Here on this page, you’ll find the causes for the no signal on the monitor along with the fixes. I faced all the issues that I’m gonna list here, so it is good for you to apply these fixes on your PC.

What’s late? Let’s get into the subject.

Select the correct input source to receive the signal

The first and simple mistake is not choosing the correct mode on your monitor. For example, you connected the CPU and the monitor with an HDMI cable. But the monitor is looking for the signals from DVI, VGA, or any other ports but not HDMI.

In this case, even if the monitor and the CPU are working fine, your monitor will not get signals from the CPU because the signal’s path was not shown correctly.

Fix it:

You can easily fix this issue by entering the monitor menu using the buttons on your monitor. Select the ‘Input Source‘ from the menu and then select the right port that you are using.

You can simply select the option called ‘Auto Select.’ So the monitor will decide to get the signals from the active port. You can see the settings menu on my Dell U2412M monitor. Based on your monitor model, these settings will vary from device to device. Here you can find different ways to find a monitor brand, model, and specs.

Still not getting a signal? Move to the next step.

Eject and input the cable to avoid a loose connection

Do you plug the cable in properly? I’m asking this because loose connections can interrupt the flow of signals from the source (CPU) to the receiving end (monitor).

Fix it:

Unplug the cable at both ends and insert it again. If the loose connection is your problem, this fix will work for you.

You did everything right, and the monitor displayed the same? Don’t worry, keep going to find the right problem along with the solution.

Your PC requires a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)

Motherboards with integrated graphics can work without an external graphics card. But not all motherboards are capable of coming up with integrated graphics memory. In such cases, the external graphics card is a must on your PC.

When your PC doesn’t have a GPU, and the motherboard is not capable of integrated graphics memory, then the monitor doesn’t get the right signals from the motherboard and resulting in causing ‘No Signal’

Fix it:

Here your PC needs a graphic card to send the signal to your monitor. You can buy a GPU for your PC on Amazon. Make sure the GPU must be compatible with your motherboard.

>>Browse for compatible GPUs

Plug the cable on the GPU port rather than the motherboard

You have a graphics card on your PC, and the monitor is not working. In this case, you need to look at the path of the cable.

Just check once whether you plug the cable from the motherboard to the monitor or GPU into the monitor.

Fix it:

If you connect the cable from the motherboard to the monitor, change its path from GPU to monitor. Make sure that the monitor and the GPU have the same ports in common. Otherwise, you need to use converters like HDMI to DisplayPort or Display to HDMI, or others.

Make proper connections of Front Panel Connectors

Improper connection of power pin connectors will cause a ‘No Signal’ error on your monitor screen. These connectors are tiny and you can easily get confused while setting them up.

The improper connection of power pins is one of the common mistakes in the PC build.

Fix it:

Don’t forget to place RAM sticks on your motherboard

There is no wonder to forget something that you need to do. While building your PC, you may forget to place RAM on the motherboard. It might happen in your case now.

Sometimes, improper RAM installation also causes this issue. And also if you can’t find BIOS on your PC, then improper RAM installation is one of the problems. Find other reasons that affect PC BIOS booting.

Fix it:

First, check once whether you insert the RAM sticks or not. And insert it if you accidentally miss it.

If you have already installed it, remove the RAM stick from the slot and place it in the right way.

Incompatible GPU doesn’t work out

A motherboard of a computer fits some specific components called compatible components. An incompatible component uses your money and time unnecessarily.

For example, your motherboard supports DDR3 GPU, but you are trying to run your PC with DDR4 GPU. Then you can say that your graphics card is an incompatible component with your PC.

In this case, your PC will show no signal error without any doubt because the motherboard and the graphics card are not in sync to generate proper signals to run a computer. To find compatible components for your computer, you must know what motherboard you have.

Fix it:

Remember, whenever you are purchasing a PC component, make sure it must be compatible with your motherboard.

Replace your current GPU with the compatible one and turn ON your PC. Go with the motherboard manual to find the compatible components of your computer.

Eject and reinsert the Graphics card to get the signal

Improper installation of a graphics card can cause a ‘No Signal’ error on your PC. If you are sure about your PC component’s compatibility, then you need to check if the graphics card is installed properly or not.

Fix it:

A simple fix to apply – Eject your GPU and insert it again on your PC.

Use the Reset button on your CPU

Your question is like, “I’m sure about the PC components. They are compatible and I place them in the right way. But, the No Signal error still irritates me. What to do?”

It’s hard for some computers to analyze the recent changes. Don’t worry, here is a fix that you can apply.

Fix it:

The reset button on the CPU.

Along with the power button, there is another button on the CPU case called the ‘Reset button.’ It might help in this case to solve the problem.

Close all the running apps on your PC and press the restart button – in most cases restarting your PC will fix these types of problems.

Is the converter doing the right thing?

Are you using a converter to convert signals from GPU to monitor?

A converter is nothing but an electronic device that can change the signals coming from the source (GPU or motherboard) to the monitor. There are various converters available in the market, like HDMI to VGA, Display to HDMI, etc.

In this case, when you are using a converter, you need to check its functionality.

For example, your GPU has an HDMI port that you are using now. But your monitor has a DisplayPort. So, you buy a converter and try to start your PC and you have this problem, No Signal.

Here I must be sure that you are using the wrong converter like display to HDMI. But actually, you need HDMI to display the port to make the right signal flow.

Fix it:

You need to buy a new converter that must be compatible with your PC components.

Use another port to find the problem

Sometimes, even if you are using the right converter, your monitor will not respond.

So, what’s the problem?

The port might damage either from the source side (GPU or motherboard) or on the monitor. When the pins of a port get damaged, the signal interruption will occur and lead to no signal.

Fix it:

No need to change your GPU, motherboard, or monitor until you are sure about it.

If the problem occurs just at a port, you must thank God because you can use another port.

If not HDMI, use Display or VGA or some other…

But it is not working even when you choose another port, then you need to change the specific PC component.

Connect your monitor with other sources

I’m suggesting you change the component, but what is the exact component that you need to change? Is it the monitor or a GPU that has a problem?

Well, to find this, you need to connect your monitor to another source. And your CPU to another monitor.

Let’s pick the first thing. Find the status of your monitor.

Fix it:

Connect your monitor to another source like a local television network or any other source with a cable. Don’t think much about it. If you have a laptop with you, connect it to your monitor.

If it supports and works properly, fine, your monitor is in good condition. Otherwise, you need to replace the monitor. Here you can find the difference between a monitor and a TV.

Is your GPU Working? Check with another monitor

The monitor working perfectly alright. Now, you need to check whether your CPU is sending the data to the monitor.

You need to use another monitor to find this.

Fix it:

Connect your PC to another monitor with the cable of a common port. If the monitor still shows ‘No signal,’ say goodbye to your GPU and buy a new one.

When the GPU working correctly, you need to enter your PC lock screen password.

Is your problem solved? Let me know.

Do you want to buy something for your PC to fix the issue? I want you to hold a minute and check all the other issues before buying something.

I don’t want you to make an unnecessary purchase. So think for a while.

Make a comment describing your issue. Also, if I forget something that causes a ‘No signal’ problem, let me know.
