What Keyboard Do I Have? Type, Model, & Size

All keyboards are not the same. Some are working with wire connection and some wireless. The 100% full-size keyboard is different from the 60% compact keyboard.

Today, we’ll see how to find what keyboard you have under your palms by finding all the answers to the following questions.

  • Type of connection
  • Keyboard type
  • Manufactured Brand
  • Model and Specs
  • Size of the keyboard

What is the Connection Type of Your Keyboard?

When it comes to the connection type, there are two types mainly, wired and wireless. Of course, some keyboards work with wire and wireless and they come under wireless keyboards.

We won’t talk about the best here. Both wired and wireless are the best in their aspects.

For example, if you are a gamer, you know the value of a wired keyboard-less latency, high performance, RGB lightning, etc, are the cool features. However wireless keyboards are not suitable for them due to connecting issues.

The above image will show you what a wired and wireless keyboard looks like.

If you use a wired USB connection to connect your keyboard to your computer or CPU, then it is a wired keyboard.

The wireless keyboard can connect in two ways to the computer – Bluetooth connection or a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi dongle connection. If you use any of these types, then your keyboard comes under wireless.

How to Find Your Keyboard Type?

This is the main one based on the performance. There are five types of keyboards based on the design or usage – Ergonomic, Magic, Optical, Membrane, and Mechanical keyboards.

Ergonomic Keyboard – These are the premium keyboards that mainly focus on comfort and efficiency. Only the popular brands have their foot in this category like Microsoft, Logitech, etc. They are too expensive.

You’ll find whether your keyboard is ergonomic or not by seeing whether the manufacturer mentioned it or not.

Magic Keyboard – All Apple keyboards are magic keyboards. If you have an Apple keyboard, then you call it a magic keyboard. That’s the name comes from its manufacturer – Apple.

Optical Keyboards – Optical keyboards are normal keyboards generally useful for typing, and playing games, with less durability, and a lack of ergonomic usage. They are budget-friendly keyboards.

If your keyboard is normal, then it comes under the optical keyboards list.

Membrane Keyboards – Membrane keyboards are also called semi-mechanical keyboards. Their design is pretty much like a mechanical keyboard but they are not 100% mechanical.

Mechanical keyboards are costly but membrane keyboards are budget-friendly with good design and high durability.

If your keyboard looks mechanical but is within budget, then it is a membrane keyboard for sure.

Mechanical Keyboard – The mechanical keyboards are good in design and robust in performance. I love mechanical keyboards because of their design, sound, and performance.

The keyboard I’m using now is a mechanical keyboard.

Just pull out the key of your keyboard. If there is a ‘plus sign’ under the key cap then it is a mechanical keyboard.

Keyboard Manufacturer or Brand

We have different ways to find a keyboard manufacturer or its brand. Let’s find them all.

Let’s take my keyboard for example, I have it under my palm right now. Now I need to know what brand, model, specs, etc.

Product Packing

On the product packing, there is a manufacturer name or brand, model, and some highlight specs.

You can see the product packing of my keyboard along with the brand name, model, and some highlight specs.

So I figured out my keyboard is a ‘Zebronics Zeb Max Ninja Premium Mechanical Keyboard’.

On the Product Itself

Just look at the four sides of your keyboard, you can find the manufacturer’s brand or logo like this.

In Windows Settings Under Connected Devices List

I connect my keyboard wirelessly to my computer. If you are like me then this works for you to find your keyboard brand.

Just press the Windows icon on your keyboard and open settings.

Then go to the Devices section. If you are already connected to your keyboard via Bluetooth then your keyboard brand will display there.

Add your new keyboard via Bluetooth in case it wasn’t connected yet.

How to Find the Keyboard Model and Specs?

Go With the Keyboard Manual

This option only works when you know your keyboard mode. Just type ‘your keyboard brand + model + manual’, then search results will show the direct link to download the manual from the manufacturer’s website or through other resources.

Flip Your Keyboard to Find its Model

To find your keyboard model, just flip your keyboard upside down. Some of the keyboard information exists there which must include the brand and model.

Manufacturer Website has Your Product Details

I know that my keyboard manufacturer is ‘Zebronics’ in the ways I’ve listed above.

Now I go to their website and browse for keyboards. Then I found a product the same as mine. I select it and find all the required information there like its brand, model, specs, keyboard manual, special keys function, etc.

What’s Your Keyboard Size?

The keyboards come in three different sizes: 100% or full-size keyboard, 75% Numpad(numeric keys)  less keyboard, and 60% compact keyboard.

The below image will have three types of keyboards based on the size.

Compact 60%, Numpad less 75%, and Full size 100% keyboards
Compact 60%, Numpad less 75%, and Full size 100% keyboards

I have used three types of keyboards and finding the best one among them is difficult because it varies from one to another.

For example, as a blogger, my profession depends a lot on writing content. So I chose a compact one.

But for people who are working in banks or account work, or designers want to use numbers every time. So a 100% or full-size keyboard is best for them.

Here the question is what size of your keyboard is? To find that, first, check the above image where my three keyboards are overlapped based on the size.

The bottom one is the 100% or full-length keyboard. The middle one is the Numpad less keyboard which is 75% and the top one is the compact or 60% keyboard.

Now, look at your keyboard, Does it have a numpad? If numpad exists, then it is a full-size keyboard with all function keys, arrow keys, and numeric keys.

If there are no separate numpad or numeric keys on your keyboard, then check for the arrow keys, separate arrow keys on your keyboard indicate that it is 75% or num padless keyboard.

Even if the arrow keys are also combined with other keys on your keyboard, then it is called a compact one.

The keyboard size matters while you are at work, so choose the correct size keyboard based on your requirements.
